The Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) in Chile announced that 42 foreign online gambling sites will be prohibited from operating in the country due to not being recognized by the governing body.
This decision is in accordance with the ruling of the Supreme Court and the Santiago Appeals Court. Telecommunications companies that provide internet services, such as Entel, Movistar, Claro, GTD, WOM and VTR, must follow the law and within 48 hours eliminate these platforms from their services.
The domains will be determined by the Superintendency of Casinos (SCJ), which is responsible for supervising the activities of the gambling operators in Chile.
Subtel Undersecretary Romina Garrido said:
As Subtel, we are strictly complying with the rulings of the courts and the regulatory framework, deploying an efficient and coordinated technical solution that protects people’s digital security. With this order, we are requiring telecommunications companies to act with the utmost speed to block access to online casino platforms operating outside the law.
This is part of the on-going discussions regarding online gambling regulations in the country. The order was instituted following the legal case filed by Lotería de Concepción against the concerned companies, as they have not complied with existing regulations.
As per the Supreme Court, illegal gambling activities must be stopped without exception. The Santiago Court of Appeals stated that blocking the DNS service is permissible; therefore, it should be done to adhere to the ruling.
