The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has issued a fine against local sports betting and gaming company MGM Springfield.
The fine, for $25,000, has come after the property’s sportsbook offered and accepted bets on a Northeastern University college baseball game that took place in April 2025.
MGC Slaps Two Gambling Companies with Fines Locally
The market was available only for two hours, but the commissioners still found it sufficient grounds to mete out the penalty in a 5-0 vote in favor.
The penalty was imposed because it is illegal to bet on collegiate sports teams in the Bay State, with the only exception being when these teams are participating in national tournaments.
This was not the only penalty approved during the MGC’s recent meeting, with another fine to the tune of $7,000 also issued against BetMGM, MGM’s mobile sports betting app, which accepted bets on boxing matches held in Saudi Arabia in 2025.
